Description

Mint State 1851-C Gold Dollar

1851-C G$1 MS61 NGC. Variety 3. The scarcer of the two reverse dies, identified by a high date and a vertical crack above the second S in STATES. The yellow-gold surfaces are only faintly abraded and show luster near design elements. An influx of California Gold Rush bullion was likely the cause for the higher mintage of the '51-C, though the production of 41,267 dollars was a tiny fraction of the 3,317,671 pieces struck at Philadelphia.
