Description

1834 Classic Head Half Eagle, AU58
Very Scarce Crosslet 4 Variety

1834 $5 Crosslet 4 AU58 NGC. Second Head, Breen-6503, McCloskey 5-D, R.4. This is the very scarce Crosslet 4 die marriage, the only one among the nine known varieties of 1834 Classic Head half eagles. Mint State examples are quite rare; even the best Smithsonian example is an AU58, the same grade as the present NGC-certified coin. Nearly full luster remains on antique-gold surfaces that show only scattered marks, most of them unseen without a loupe. A small nick on Liberty's neck is the sole mentionable contact. The certified populations are doubtless inflated. An MS62 NGC example we handled in April 2013, lot 4519, sold for $22,912.50, but it has been many years since we offered an example in this grade. It appears that these coins tend to stay with their owners for quite some time. Census: 11 in 58, 11 finer (12/13).(Registry values: P3)

Coin Index Numbers: (PCGS# 8172, Greysheet# 8857)

Weight: 8.36 grams
