Description

1856-D Quarter Eagle, AU50
Only 874 Pieces Produced
Ex: Ashland City

1856-D $2 1/2 -- Minor Obverse Lamination -- AU50 PCGS. Variety 20-N. The 1856-D has the lowest mintage in the Dahlonega series of quarter eagles, with a tiny emission of only 874 coins. Like all known examples, the present piece has ill-defined stars, and is lightly impressed at the centers. The apricot-gold surfaces are impressively void of abrasions, but we note a straight and narrow mint-made obverse lamination between stars 7 and 12 that is less of a distraction than the description might imply.
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 2/2001), lot 6869; Ashland City Collection (Heritage, 1/2003), lot 4706; FUN Signature (Heritage, 7/2013), lot 3299.
