Very Fine Details

Desirable Survivor from the Silver
Coinage of Massachusetts

1652 6PENCE Willow Tree Sixpence -- Plugged -- NGC Details. VF. Noe-1-A, W-130, Salmon 1-A, High R.6. 30.8 gn. The Ford sale in October 2005 included an unprecedented second example of a Willow Tree sixpence. With a known population of only 14 specimens, it is certainly noteworthy when a collection contains more than a single example, as is the case with The Old New England Collection.

John Hull and Robert Sanderson minted the silver coins of Massachusetts beginning in 1652, with the initial undated NE coins quickly followed by the Willow Tree coins, as they eventually came to be known. Hull was born in Harborough, Leicester, England in 1624, emigrating from England in 1635. His work with silver and gold, along with shipping interests, led to his prosperity. Hull was said to have provided a dowry of £500 when his daughter Hannah married Samuel Sewell. Sewell later became the official printer of the colony and published The Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan. Nathaniel Hawthorne incorporated the dowry story into Grandfather's Chair, with the payment made in Pine Tree shillings in an amount equivalent to Hannah's weight. Robert Sanderson was born in Norwich, Norfolkshire, England in 1608. He apprenticed with William Rawlins in London for nearly a decade before immigrating to New Hampshire, eventually settling in Boston.

Displaying VF details, this sixpence piece exhibits a slightly off-center strike on both sides, toward the left. Attractively toned, this specimen features hues of gold, sea-green, and sky-blue. Aside from the far right portion, the willow tree design is nicely detailed. The date on the reverse was impacted due to multiple punches on that side, though the majority is legible. Listed on page 38 of the 2014 Guide Book.
