Description

1815/2 Half Dollar, Colorful AU58
O-101a, Cracked Reverse

1815/2 50C O-101a, R.3, AU58 NGC. CAC. Desperate for circulating coinage, the Mint scrambled to produce 47,150 half dollars from a dormant set of 1812 dies -- repurposed by an overpunched 5 replacing the mostly effaced 2. Coins were quickly pressed into service, and few near-Mint or finer pieces survive. The underlying 2 is actually more prominent on this coin than on some examples, although the mottled toning does its share to camouflage the overdate.

The surfaces are sharply struck with ample silver luster beneath the attractive patina. Die clashing and metal flow lines are visible with a glass, but the lack of abrasions or marks suggest little or no actual circulation. Shades of purple, burnt-orange, lilac, and blue provide welcome relief from the often-subdued appearance of most 1815/2 halves. The eye appeal is exceptional. CAC endorsed, housed in an old, pre-hologram NGC holder.
