Description

Key 1926-S Nickel, MS64
High-End for the Issue and Grade

1926-S 5C MS64 PCGS. CAC. The 1926-S holds the title of lowest-mintage regular issue in the popular Buffalo nickel series at 970,000 coins, and today Gems are all but unobtainable. PCGS shows only 14 in that top grade -- a certified total that we note is the smallest of any nonvariety issue in the series (3/14). This near-Gem should be vigorously contested at auction, given its old green-label certification and CAC approbation. The obverse strike is fairly bold and the reverse strike, while made from fatigued dies, is still sharper than on most examples of this issue, notorious for that attribute. While not sharp, a decent level of detail appears on the horn, the fur, the tail, and the mintmark. Semireflective luster enlivens the surfaces, nickel-gray with touches of pinkish and gold. No singular contact appears on this piece, which we consider high-end for the grade.
