1803 Large 8 Half Dime, V-2, LM-3, AU58
Seldom Seen So Fine
1803 H10C Large 8 AU58 PCGS. V-2, LM-3, R.3. The Large 8
obverse die is a sufficient diagnostic for that side, and on the
reverse, the leaf touching the last A in AMERICA identifies the
V-2, LM-3 die marriage, as the other Large 8 reverse has the leaf
touching the C. This die marriage is only slightly uncommon
although still fairly rare in such high grade as the present AU58
example. The 8 is not only large and quite close to the adjacent 0,
but it is also crudely reworked or reengraved, particularly on the
upper loop where a portion of a smaller 8 figure appears. This
piece shows a uniform pinkish-gray cast throughout most of each
side, with quite a lot of luster remaining. A couple of digs appear
on Liberty, one at the rear drapery, one at the lower edge of the
neck. Bold clash marks appear above the date from the clouds on the
reverse.(Registry values: P7)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 2329, PCGS# 4269, Greysheet# 3728)
