Description

1857-S Half Eagle, MS61
Original CAC-Endorsed Surfaces
A Notable Rarity in Mint State

1857-S $5 MS61 PCGS. CAC. Ex: The Fairmont Collection. Uncirculated examples of the 1857-S half eagle are notoriously difficult to acquire in Mint State. Although 87,000 coins were struck, most saw commercial use on the West Coast. The rarity of this issue in high grade might seem surprising in light of the high availability of the 1857-S double eagle, which would ordinarily have been subject to the same economic conditions. However, were it not for the S.S. Central America recovery efforts, the 1857-S twenty would also be a challenging date in Mint State. The 1857-S five dollar piece is fittingly rare this fine, given its mintage and the domestic circulation it endured.

The current coin boasts CAC endorsement, with frosty greenish-gold luster and well-defined motifs. Few singular abrasions are seen, and collections of old-time dirt in the crevices attest to the originality of its surfaces. Population: 5 in 61, 10 finer. CAC: 2 in 61, 12 finer (12/24).
