Description

1877 Half Eagle, AU50
Underrated Philadelphia Rarity

1877 $5 AU50 PCGS. Ex: The Fairmont Collection. Blatantly original patina with hunts of luster covers this AU 1877 half eagle in competing olive-gold and autumn-gold hues. Slight softness appears only on the eagle's neck and the fletchings, as usual for the date. Two abrasions serve as pedigree markers, one a vertical mark between the eagle's left (facing) wing and the D in UNITED, the other a horizontal mark at Liberty's throat under the chin. Other surface marks are in keeping with the grade's expectations. The 1877 as a date is a major rarity. Only 1,132 pieces were struck, and fewer than 100 are believed to survive. Population: 6 in 50, 25 finer (12/24).
