Description
1924 Saint-Gaudens Twenty, MS67
Dazzling Cartwheel Luster
One Finer Coin at PCGS
1924 $20 MS67 PCGS. CAC. This is among the most often
encountered of all Saint-Gaudens double eagles. The Mint struck 4.3
million twenty dollar gold pieces in 1924 despite holdings of
nearly $119 million in gold coinage from previous years. The new
coins must have been necessary for international payments. Burdette
reports that $50 million in new double eagles were shipped out to
the Federal Reserve Banks and New York Assay Office in 1924 for
eventual export. Survival rates suggest the 1924 double eagles sat
in European and Central and South American vaults, where they were
left largely undisturbed. Representatives are widely available
through MS66 and only become truly elusive in this remarkable
grade. Cartwheel luster swirls over immaculately preserved,
peach-gold surfaces. The relief elements show a near-full strike.
Slight softness occurs at the lower-left obverse. Locating a more
appropriate example for type purposes would prove exceedingly
difficult. Population: 97 in 67 (2 in 67+), 1 finer. CAC: 27 in 67,
0 finer (9/16).From The Cherny Collection.(Registry values: N4719)
