Description
Brilliant Mint State 1867 Double Eagle
1867 $20 MS62 PCGS. Throughout the year, the Mint in Philadelphia produced a total of 251,015 business strikes of this date, and enough examples remain in circulated grades that nearly any collector can obtain one with little difficulty. Quite a number of Mint State examples are also known today, but nearly every one of those grades only MS60 or MS61. Just one more point on the grading scale makes a big difference. Examples that are similar to this piece, with an MS62 grade, are seldom encountered, and finer grade coins are downright rare. In fact, PCGS has only graded one better examples in 20 years since there 1986 inception.Despite a few blemishes on each side, this is a glorious specimen with deep orange-gold toning and light pink toning. All of the design elements are well defined. For the numismatic student, this is an intriguing issue with a large date logotype that was also used on 1867 Seated Liberty dollars. The lower left serif of the 1 is slightly longer and heavier than the lower right serif, and it is the same length as the upper serif of that digit. On this die, the date has a high placement with the top of the 1 nearly touching the bust. The initial J in J.B.L. is a hair left of center over the 8. We are not aware of any study of date positions on double eagles, but such a task would not be difficult, and would essentially involve a catalog of the relationship between the digit 1 and the bust, as well as the relationship between Longacre's initials and other date elements.(Registry values: N4719)
