Description

Important Mint State 1868-S Double Eagle Rarity, MS62

1868-S $20 MS62 NGC. A frosty and fully lustrous Mint State example of this important issue that is nearly at the top of the population charts. A single MS64 specimen is the only finer coin certified by NGC, and PCGS has never graded an example of this date finer than MS61. A common scenario among double eagles struck in San Francisco is the combination of a substantial mintage and immediate circulation of nearly every example coined. In all Mint State grades, PCGS and NGC have only certified 38 Mint States examples, combined. As testimony to the rarity of this issue in Mint State grades, the best example acquired by Harry Bass was just AU58, and the Louis Eliasberg specimen was only XF45. Census: 3 in 62, 1 finer (7/06).(Registry values: N7079)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26A4, PCGS# 8954, Greysheet# 9909)
