Description

1850-O Double Eagle, AU55
Pleasing First-Year Example

1850-O $20 AU55 NGC. Variety 2. Although readily available in lower circulated grades through XF45, this first-year issue from the New Orleans mint becomes progressively scarcer in AU condition and rare in Mint State. Only six coins are rated as Uncirculated: five by NGC and just one example at PCGS. The single finest-graded piece resides in an NGC MS62 holder.

The current Choice AU specimen is an attractive coin that exhibits crisply defined obverse motifs and just a few select areas of weakness on some the reverse high points, which may be partially due to friction in circulation. Liberty's cheek is remarkably smooth for the grade. The lime-gold fields are offset by pastel red-peach accents on some of the design's high points. Wispy hairlines are noted in the fields, but there are only a handful of trivial abrasions seen on each side of this pleasing example. Census: 41 in 55, 19 finer (6/14).
