Description
1844-D Half Eagle, XF40
Old 'Rattler' Holder, Gold CAC Label
1844-D $5 XF40 PCGS. Gold CAC. Large D, Unlisted Variety.
CAC has awarded this lightly circulated 1844-D half eagle a Gold
label, and it is the only example of the issue to be so endorsed.
Housed in a first generation holder, this Dahlonega coin exhibits
considerable weakness on the hair curls around Liberty's face and
on the central eagle, but almost all of that weakness is due to a
deficient strike, not circulation. Luster remains in the fields
amid natural olive-gold patina. Neither side exhibits individually
significant abrasions. The mintmark is slightly larger than the
usual Medium D seen, and there are die lines in the field around
the eagle. From The HBC Collection. (Registry values: P2)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25T9, PCGS# 8221, Greysheet# 8976)
Weight: 8.36 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
