Description

1807 Quarter Eagle, XF40
Favorite Date for Early Series Type

1807 $2 1/2 XF40 PCGS. BD-1, R.3. This date is often the favorite candidate for early quarter eagle type. Although the approximate mintage of 6,812 seems small, the date is the most often-seen for type because all the other mintages in the series are even less. This example displays green-gold surfaces with pleasing orange-gold accents. Moderate circulation defines the grade, and softens the severity of any abrasions. Remaining mint luster at the margins and within some of the devices provides nice eye appeal. Attractive XF early gold is challenging to find, making this piece especially desirable for potential bidders. PCGS has certified just 14 XF40 examples, and NGC just two pieces more (3/14).(Registry values: P5)
