Description

1916-S Indian Half Eagle, MS64
An Era-Ending Issue

1916-S $5 MS64 NGC. Following the start of the Indian Head design in 1908, the Philadelphia Mint suspended half eagle coinage in 1915, and there were no 1916 pieces struck at the head Mint in Pennsylvania. San Francisco had the only production facility for the denomination in 1916. This issue would also prove to mark the end of an error since the California Mint began striking half eagles over 60 years earlier in 1854. This wonderful Choice Mint State half eagle exhibits brilliant peach-gold surfaces with frosty mint luster. Census: 68 in 64 (6 in 64+), 14 finer (12/24).(Registry values: N4719)
