Description

1845-D Variety 6-J Quarter Eagle, MS62
Above Average Strike

1845-D $2 1/2 MS62 PCGS. Variety 6-J. The only variety for 1845-D quarter eagles, used for the production of 19,460 coins, according to Mint records. Issued at a time of peak production for the Dahlonega Mint. That facility converted 28,000 ounces of gold into coins in 1843, and 24,000 ounces in 1845, the two highest production totals in the history of that facility.

This lovely example has a bold strike for the issue, showing weakness only over Liberty's ear and on the eagle's neck. The reflective surfaces have full yellow-gold brilliance with a hint of green. An exceptional example is one of only nine Mint State 1845-D quarter eagles that PCGS has certified. Population: 2 in 62, 2 finer (3/14).(Registry values: P2)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25GX, PCGS# 7738, Greysheet# 8349)
