Description

1850-O Ten Dollar, AU58
Recovered From the
S.S. Republic

1850-O $10 AU58 NGC. Winter-2. Ex: S.S. Republic, Museum Collection. This coin displays the scarcer of two die pairs that combined to strike 57,500 1850-O eagles. The 1850-O has only about one-tenth the mintage of its 1847-O predecessor, and less than one-fourth the production of 1852-O. As a result, the 1850-O is a scarce coin in any grade above Extremely Fine, and AU55 to AU58 examples are about as nice as this issue is generally seen. In Uncirculated, the 1850-O is rare with just three or four pieces known. This smoothly and minimally marked near-Mint example retains glimpses of pleasing luster on attractive green-gold surfaces. Tiny marks are distributed, but no marks are individually consequential. NGC Census: 16 in 58, 3 finer (12/24).(Registry values: N2998)
