Description

1864-S Ten Dollar, VF30
Extremely Rare S-Mint Issue
25 to 30 Pieces Known

1864-S $10 VF30 PCGS. The 1864-S is the rarest No Motto issue, and also the rarest San Francisco ten dollar issue. Doug Winter estimates no more than 25 to 30 examples exist in all grades. Just 2,500 pieces were struck and few survive (none in Mint State).

This example is a solid coin that can fill an important spot in a collection of No Motto or Civil War-dated gold. The abrasions are minimized by moderate wear, and olive-gold surfaces display the smooth appeal of well-circulated gold. With recent prices for XF examples of this date reaching record six-figure levels, this VF30 coin may be the right candidate for an astute bidder looking to fill a troublesome hole in an advanced circulated set. Population: 4 in 30, 13 finer (3/14).
