Description

1859-S Twenty, MS61
Attractive and Conditionally Scarce

1859-S $20 MS61 PCGS. The ample San Francisco mintage of 636,445 pieces was much larger than either the Philadelphia Mint production of 43,597 coins or the tiny New Orleans output of 9,100 examples. Garrett and Guth (2008) comment, regarding this issue that: "Examples may be found in grades of Very Fine to About Uncirculated without too much difficulty. Most of these will be heavily marked, as the production for the year was widely circulated."

The surfaces of this Mint State specimen are lustrous and mildly marked, with pleasing rose-gold and light-orange toning intermingled over both sides. A conditionally scarce example that should draw considerable attention when it crosses the auction block. Population: 16 in 61, 15 finer (3/14).(Registry values: N4719)
