Description

1873-CC Twenty, XF45
Original Appeal

1873-CC $20 XF45 PCGS. CAC. Variety 1-A. Some examples of this issue have a misplaced digit in the denticles between the 73, but this is the variety with a normal date area. Struck in a time of financial uproar and fiscal panic, this Carson City twenty had a low production of just 22,410 pieces -- most of which circulated in the West. Few were exported or saved by collectors, resulting in Uncirculated survivors being rare in all grades. Attractive circulated examples (such as this coin) are highly valued and popular as the only readily collectible representatives of the date. This pleasing, XF45 example is Choice in all regards. Orange-gold mint luster remains surprisingly visible over the appealing surfaces. Light wear from circulation softens the abrasions, so the coin appears visually smooth and minimally marked. Excellent detail remains. This coin received the CAC-Approval sticker and is housed in an older, green-label holder.
