Description

Choice AU 1795 Small Eagle, BD-3
Minimally Abraded Surfaces

1795 $5 Small Eagle AU55 NGC. CAC. BD-3, High R.3. Dannreuther Die State b/b. The tip of the 5 in the date barely touches the drapery at the bottom of Liberty's bust. Star 1 is below the lowest hair curl and touches it with one point. Star 11 is clearly intersecting the Y in LIBERTY, and stars 11-12 are closely overlapping. The stars overall are awkwardly placed around the perimeter, 15 stars in all, 10 on the left side and five on the right. This obverse die was previously used for the BD-2 and would be used again for the BD-4.
The reverse die has the wreath showing two berries each inside and outside. The longest leaf on the bottom of the palm frond extends to the center of the U in UNITED. A second leaf runs to beneath the center of the N, and the topmost, longest leaf extends to beneath the left serif of the I in UNITED.
This is the sole use of this reverse die, curiously so, as there are no examples known that show some heavy die crack (terminal die state) that might have forced the retirement of this die. At High R.3, the BD-3 is by far the most relatively "available" of the 12 die marriages known for the date. In true contrarian fashion, however, the BD-3's availability increases its intense demand, stemming from first-year-of-type collectors, early gold specialists, and many other factions of the collecting community.
This Choice AU NGC example with CAC endorsement displays only minor traces of friction on the high points of each side, but traces of luster remain around the devices. The surfaces are bright yellow-gold save for reddish device outlines. There are minimal abrasions: The only mark of any merit is a curved lint mark in the lower right obverse field. Some strike softness appears in the centers, and no adjustment marks are evident.(Registry values: P5)
