Description

1868 Dime Pattern in Copper
Judd-645, PR64 Red and Brown
Combined 2-3 Pieces Known of This Issue
Ex: Garrett

1868 10C Ten Cents, Judd-645, Pollock-717, Cassel-60, R.8, PR64 Red and Brown PCGS. 38.7 grains. Ex: Garrett. This unusual and rare pattern shows a small shield and inverted wreath on the obverse and a legend that reads EXCHANGED FOR U.S. NOTES. The reverse is laid out in a peculiar fashion also with ONE DIME in the center, a six-pointed star above, the date below, and all surrounded by a wreath of cotton, corn, and tobacco. Struck in copper, medallic alignment, and a plain edge. Only one or two other heavy weight examples of this pattern are known. The plain edge copper strikings (now believed unique) were not included in the Adams-Woodin pattern reference in 1913, but have been included in both the Judd and Pollock references. This piece was SEM-EDX tested by QC Metallurgical on certificate number 70863.64/21873025.

The surfaces are remarkably clean and problem-free for the stated grade. Original mint red is obvious beneath the light layer of brown patina that covers each side. Fully defined throughout with significant mirroring in the fields.
