Description

1859 Indian Cent Pattern, PR12
Judd-230, Pure Copper

1859 DT1C Indian Cent, Judd-230, Pollock-274, High R.7, PR12 NGC. Ex: Col. Green, Eric P. Newman Collection. 4.7 gm. Struck from regular issue 1859 Indian cent plain edge dies, but in 100% copper instead of the expected 88% copper, 12% nickel alloy. The cent undoubtedly circulated for a number of years until was saved, probably because of its pre-Civil War date, or laurel wreath reverse. But its status as a pattern was known to Newman, who paid $12.50 for it when he acquired it circa-1940. The mahogany-brown surfaces display distributed unimportant marks, in addition to a small rim knock at 7 o'clock on the reverse.

Coin Index Numbers: (PCGS# 11944, Greysheet# 12339)
