Description

1839 Ten Dollar, Unc Details
An Attractive Example of This Brief Type

1839 $10 Type of 1838, Large Letters -- Obverse Planchet Flaw -- NGC Details. Unc. Large Letters was the previous nickname for this subtype, which is now designated as the Type of 1838. Most of the known examples are overdates, as is this example, showing remnants of an 8 beneath the 9 in the date. This is a highly attractive coin showing obvious attributes of an Uncirculated piece, including unimpeded luster and a lack of high-point wear. A deep mark on the lower obverse, directly below star 13, is classified as a a planchet flaw by NGC. There is no evidence of metal being moved in this area.
