The First Year of the Type Three

1877-CC $20 AU55 NGC. Variety 1-A. Attributed by the horizontal shield clashmarks above Liberty's earlobe and the second C in the mintmark higher than the first C. The 1877-CC Liberty double eagle represents the first year of the Type Three reverse, making it an important issue for mintmark type collectors. Peach-gold surfaces display sharply-struck design elements that are highlighted on the reverse by partially prooflike fields. Both sides are minimally marked for a large gold coin having seen some circulation.(Registry values: N1793)
