Description
Select Mint State 1855 Type Two Gold Dollar
1855 G$1 MS63 PCGS. The gold dollar and the double eagle were at the two denomination extremes of coinage produced by the United States Mint for circulation. Both denominations were created as a direct result of gold discoveries in California and were authorized by the same Congressional legislation, the Mint Act of March 3, 1849. Section One of this coinage act read: "Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That there shall be, from time to time, struck and coined at the mint of the United States, and the branches thereof, conformably in all respects to law, (except that on the reverse of the gold dollar the figure of the eagle shall be omitted,) and conformably in all respects to the standard for gold coins now established by law, coins of gold of the following denominations and values, viz.: double eagles, each to be of the value of twenty dollars, or units, and gold dollars, each to be of the value of one dollar, or unit."During the 41-year period of gold dollar production, three different designs or types were produced. This Small Indian Head design was the second, and the shortest lived, being produced only in 1854, 1855, and 1856. This 1855-dated specimen is incredible for its greenish-yellow color and frosty luster. The center of each side is weak, the deep recesses of the obverse die created considerable weakness at LL of DOLLAR and the digit 8 in the date. It was this inherent design flaw that created the need for a third design in 1856. This example has very minor contact marks, and has prominent clash marks on the reverse, the latter as minted.(#7532) (Registry values: N4719)
