Description

Pleasing MS63 1855 Type Two Gold Dollar

1855 G$1 MS63 PCGS. The inherent design flaw caused considerable weakness at the center of the reverse on most Type Two gold dollars. The deepest recess of the obverse die (the high point of the design) was the hair above Liberty's ear and eye, up to her forehead. Once the die pair was set up in the coinage press, this deep recess on the obverse was aligned opposite the digit 8 in the date and LL of DOLLAR. As a result, these features on the reverse were invariably weak or invisible. This example is an exception to the rule. The hair detail on the obverse is very sharply struck, the date is complete, and all letters of DOLLAR are sharp. Prominent clash marks are visible on both sides. The surfaces, while lightly abraded, are attractive with considerable bright yellow luster and hints of orange toning. The fields are very slightly reflective; some would say prooflike. This is a Select Mint State example with exceptional aesthetic appeal.(#7532) (Registry values: N4719)
