Description

Popular Proof-Only 1879 Trade Dollar, An Awe-Inspiring PR66 Cameo NGC Example

1879 T$1 PR66 Cameo NGC. In the 1993 book Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States: A Complete Encyclopedia, Bowers states of this issue: "Most specimens were saved, but with varying degrees of care. Examples are readily available, for a price, in the different grade levels from Proof-60 to Proof-65." The author says nothing about the availability of premium quality Gems. We can, however, state that the 1879 Trade Dollar is a challenging coin to locate at the PR66 level, especially with a Cameo designation. This is a truly lovely representative whose golden tinged features are richly frosted over the devices and deeply reflective in the fields. There is not a single ill-defined feature, nor are there any grade-limiting blemishes. NGC and PCGS combined have seen just 12 examples at the PR66 Cameo level, and only four have been certified finer (10/02). The top of the 8 in the date is incomplete from a chipped logotype punch. It seems that most, if not all proof 1879 Trade Dollars display this feature.
