Description
Uncommonly High Grade 1844-C Two-and-a-Half
1844-C $2 1/2 AU50 NGC. The absence of a quarter eagle delivery at the Charlotte Mint in 1845 resulted in increased public demand for the 11,662 coins delivered in 1844. As a result, the 1844-C is often offered in grades as low as VG and Fine, or several levels of preservation below that of most other C-mint Quarter Eagles. According to Winter, the present example is one of perhaps 12 AU representatives extant, and it is just below Condition Census for the issue. Both sides are typically detailed with softness of strike in the centers and obverse star centrils that range from boldly to poorly detailed. A plethora of small to moderate abrasions are seen throughout, another feature of this heavily circulated issue. Deeply set orange-gold and green-gold colors are suggestive of originality. In high grades (AU and finer), the '44-C is surpassed in rarity by only the 1841-C, 1842-C, and 1846-C among all C-mint Quarter Eagles. From the Richard Genaitis Collection.
