Description

Important Uncirculated 1844-C Coronet Quarter Eagle

1844-C $2 1/2 MS 61 NGC. The 1844-C is one of the most difficult Charlotte quarter eagles to find in high levels of preservation. A fire at the North Carolina facility on July 28, 1844 forced authorities to cease production until early 1846. This resulted in many of the 11,622 1844-C pieces suffering extensive circulation throughout Lower Appalachia. A classic rarity in all Uncirculated grades, the present specimen displays bright yellow-gold surfaces and a decided green cast. The somewhat scuffy appearance seems to account for the low Mint State assessment, but both the obverse and the reverse are devoid of individually distracting contact marks. A fleeting opportunity for attentive gold collectors, this numismatic treasure deserves a carefully considered bid. Population: 5 in 61, only 1 finer (9/99).
