Description

High Grade 1839-D Quarter Eagle

1839-D $2 1/2 AU55 NGC. Winter 1-A, McCloskey-A, R.3. The NGC insert identifies this issue as an 1839/8, which only adds to the uncertainty over whether the final digit of the date is recut over a 9 or an 8. This reddish-golden example is reasonably well struck and has several distinct field marks on each side. A horizontal depression on the eagle's shield is likely the result of foreign matter on the dies.
