Description

Scarce 1843-D Large D Quarter Eagle AU53

1843-D $2 1/2 Large D AU53 NGC. Winter 4-G. Natural green-gold surfaces are well balanced and retain a fair amount of hidden luster, with characteristic bluntness on the curl over Liberty's ear. It is believed that a total of 3,537 Large D 1843-D Quarter Eagles were produced on October 7, 1843. This is an elusive and significant naked-eye variety which was, at one time, regarded as an essential issue in the Dahlonega Quarter Eagle set. In fact, in the 1950s and 1960s, examples of this variety sold at auction for nearly three times the small mintmark price.
