Description
Rare, High Grade 1858 Ten-Dollar
1858 AU 53 PCGS. The majority of 1858 tens extant are from this later die state that was created by overzealous die lapping which resulted in the hair curls being detached from the back of Liberty's neck. In fact, it may well be that only one coin is known today from the unlapped dies. It is now believed by most numismatic researchers that approximately 25 to 30 examples of this rare date are known from the original, tiny mintage of 2,521 pieces. This is a well struck piece that has bright orange-gold color and significant portions of mint luster remaining in the protected areas. A few small abrasions are scattered across each side, but none are worthy of individual mention.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 263W, PCGS# 8625, Greysheet# 9379)
Weight: 16.72 grams
