Description

Very Scarce 1862-S Half Eagle AU55

1862-S $5 AU55 NGC. In his 1988 Complete Encyclopedia, Walter Breen described this rare, low-mintage issue as "prohibitively rare above VF, unknown above EF." Since then, a small number of higher grade pieces have been found. PCGS and NGC have each certified one example as MS61 with an AU58 by NGC and a few AU55 examples by both services. It is possible that the two MS61 examples are a single coin, submitted once to each service. This specimen is probably one of the five or six finest examples known. Light yellow-gold surfaces have few very minor imperfections. This Civil War era half eagle has excellent eye appeal. The present opportunity is one the specialist will greet with delight. Population: 5 in 55, 3 finer (1/05).(#8293) (Registry values: P8)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25VR, PCGS# 8293, Greysheet# 9040)

Weight: 8.36 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
