Description

Rare 1866-S Five Dollar, Ex: Pittman Collection

1866-S $5 No Motto XF45 NGC. Ex: Pittman. An issue that is seldom encountered at or above the XF level, the 1866-S No Motto is unknown in Mint State at either NGC or PCGS (1/05). This is a pleasingly sharp representative with light, evenly distributed wear and a not excessive number of distracting abrasions. Both sides present an original, orange-gold and khaki-gold sheen. A few grazes in the left reverse field above the olive branch should serve as useful pedigree markers. The San Francisco Mint used the same reverse die as the 1856-S to deliver 9,000 1866-S Half Eagles of the No Motto type.
Ex: John Jay Pittman Collection (Akers, 10/97), lot 1029, where it traded hands for $2,860. Pittman purchased the coin from Stack's for $450 on 7/6/1961.(#8300) (Registry values: P8)
