Description

Very Scarce 1881 Half Eagle PR63 Cameo

1881 $5 PR63 Cameo ANACS. An elusive early Half Eagle proof, one of a mere 42 pieces struck. Of that number, estimates of survivors range from "very rare" (Akers) to "fewer than 15" (Breen). This is a visually impressive proof with deep, watery fields and modest contrast on the devices. There are a few wispy hairlines on the portrait in addition to several microscopic disturbances in the left obverse field, but these are very minor and require magnification to be seen.
