Description

Gorgeous Superb Gem 1861 Cent

1861 1C MS67 PCGS. Potent cartwheel luster sweeps the light chestnut-tan surfaces. This Superb Gem appears virtually immaculate, even when inspected with a loupe, aside from a small gray spot beneath the upper right wreath end. The strike is exacting except for a few feather tips. Among the Civil War dates, the 1861 has the lowest mintage, since cents remained in circulation that year. Production was ramped up between 1862 and 1865, in an attempt to replace cents hoarded from circulation. An 1864 reduction in weight and change in alloy helped return Indian cents to commerce. Population: 9 in 67, 1 finer (8/07).(Registry values: N2998)
