Captivating MS62 1858-O Ten Dollar

1858-O $10 MS62 PCGS. It has been ten years (October, 1995) since we offered an 1858-O ten that was comparable in grade to this piece. While once regarded as rare in any condition, the discovery of a small hoard of 15-30 pieces in Jackson, Tennessee in 1985 changed the landscape of the Condition Census for this issue. Some of these hoard pieces were even Mint State, but were considered only average quality Uncs. This is a wonderful piece that has strong semi-prooflike fields on each side that have a bit of scattered cartwheel luster intermixed. The central details are sharply impressed with the only area of weakness being on the peripheral stars. The bright yellow-gold surfaces have a slight overlay of reddish patina, and the only mark of note is a long, diagonal dig in the reverse field just left of the eagle's beak. Population: 3 in 62, 1 finer (1/05).(#8626) (Registry values: N4719)
