Description

PCGS 1858 PR 66. An important proof striking. Only an estimated 80 proofs were produced in 1858, which was the first year the mint stepped up the numbers of proofs coined to meet the demand from the general collecting public. This is also the only year that one can hope to locate a Stars half dime in proof (remember the 1859 is a separate design type). The fields are deeply mirrored and the surfaces are deeply toned as well with violet centers surrounded by cobalt-blue at the margins. This is the only Proof 66 certified by PCGS and none are finer.
