Description

Scarce 1859-S Seated Dollar AU58

1859-S $1 AU58 ANACS. The Philadelphia Mint shipped four pairs of Seated dollar dies west for this, the premier production of this denomination in San Francisco, at the request of San Francisco Mint Superintendent Charles H. Hempstead. Neither side is toned, and both exhibit uncommonly sharp striking detail for the type that is particularly impressive on the obverse on Liberty's head and the star centrils, and on the reverse on the eagle's left (facing) leg feathers. There is little evident wear, although scattered abrasions are seen on both sides. Census: 19 in 58, 17 finer (10/07).(Registry values: N2998)
