Description

Highly Elusive Pattern

Pedro II copper-nickel Pattern 50 Reis 1871 MS63 NGC, KM-Pn143, LMB-V001, Bentes-608.01 (R3). Mintage: 143. First year of the type. An iconic issue, at first thought to be a business strike issued with the 100 and 200 Reis denominations in that same year, but later accepted as a Pattern due to its minuscule mintage, especially when compared to the 590,000 minted the following year. A sought-after type, displayed here with razor-sharp devices and the usual satiny surfaces seen in well-preserved Brazilian nickels. The finest certified by NGC and only the second example we've handled, the other selling for $7,500 in September 2008 (Heritage #3002, lot 20390).

Metal: Copper-Nickel
