Description

1842 Seated Dollar, PR62
Only Eight to 10 Proofs Extant
The John Jay Pittman Coin

1842 $1 PR62 PCGS. Ex: Pittman. Each side of this fully mirrored proof Seated dollar offers deeply reflective fields with lightly frosted devices, all beneath translucent champagne-gold toning. Insignificant hairlines and contact marks are visible mostly in the fields. A line near star 2 matches the Pittman plate and identifies the provenance of this piece. The top edge of the left (facing) wing is weak, while the remaining design motifs are needle-sharp.

Population Data (9/15): PCGS shows one submission each in PR62, PR64, and PR65. NGC reports one PR62 and seven finer. Resubmissions inflate these figures.

Heritage Commentary: The 1842 Seated dollar is a very rare proof issue with perhaps 10 pieces extant. David Akers estimated 10 to 12 pieces survive in the Pittman catalog, while Dave Bowers estimated seven to 14 proofs in his Silver Dollar Encyclopedia. We have traced eight individual examples (see roster) plus 10 additional appearances that we are unable to conclusively match to the eight coins on the roster.
