Description

1793 S-11b Wreath Cent, AU53
First Lettered Edge

1793 1C S-11b R4 Wreath Cent, Lettered Edge, Two Leaves Following DOLLAR, AU53 PCGS. Frosty light to medium brown delicately mottled with darker steel brown. Hints of lustrous lighter brown faded down from mint color show in protected areas. The central part of each side is softly struck, which is characteristic of the late die state, but the remainder of the devices are nicely struck. The softly struck centers show tiny planchet chips, as usual, but the fields outside the centers are smooth. Lightly worn on the highpoints with excellent eye appeal overall. The notable marks are a couple fine hairline scratches on the neck, a nick-like planchet chip left of the nostril, a small planchet delamination at the dentils below the right side of the fraction, and a faint disjointed planchet crease from the right edge of the second S in STATES down to the second A in AMERICA. LDS, Breen state IV. The heavy die clashmarks have been lapped off the die and the profile of Miss Liberty is weaker. The edge lettering is bold. Graded EF45 net VF30 and tied for CC#6 honors with the ANS example in the Noyes census, his photos #85056 and 60660. Bland says VF30 and tied for CC#6. Neither Noyes nor Bland actually saw this coin; rather they graded it using rather grainy photos in the 1962 New Netherlands Coin Company auction catalog. This cataloger's EAC grade is EF40. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label (35474.53/13666794). The reverse of the holder is scratched.

The New Netherlands Coin Company's 56th auction catalog (June 27-28, 1962) presents an extraordinary sale of American and world numismatics, anchored by the second portion of a European gentleman's collection. The offering spans early American colonial issues, Washingtoniana, fractional California gold, and an extensive array of foreign coins and medals. Highlights include important Massachusetts silver coinage such as Oak, Pine, and Spiny Tree shillings, rare Vermont and Connecticut coppers, notable New Jersey cents, and scarce Fugio cents. Particularly emphasized are the United States large cents, many of which rank among the finest known or condition census examples, making the sale especially attractive to specialists in early U.S. copper. The catalog also contains fascinating pieces like "witch" coins with teeth marks, unusual mint errors, and historically significant overstrikes, which lend the offering both rarity and narrative richness.
In addition to early American material, the catalog broadens its scope with an array of tokens, medals, and foreign issues. These include French Colonial coins, Hard Times tokens, Kentucky and Myddelton tokens, as well as British and Russian rarities such as Griquatown pieces and Russian plate money. Fractional California gold is strongly represented, with several brilliant proofs and rare varieties seldom offered in any condition. The catalog balances highly specialized rarities with a range of more accessible type coins, creating opportunities for both advanced collectors and generalists. Overall, the June 1962 New Netherlands sale stands out as a carefully curated presentation of numismatic treasures that emphasize quality, rarity, and historical significance. Lot 498, the "Finest Existing" 1799/8 S-188 cent realized $10,500, the top price in this offering.
