Description

1794 S-22 Head of 1794 Cent, AU58+
Intermediate Die State

1794 1C S-22 R1 Head of 1794 AU58+ PCGS. CAC Approved. Very attractive glossy brown and light chocolate with three specks of darker olive brown toning in the field off the lower curls. Nearly flawless, just lightly worn on the highpoints. The best identifying marks, and they are trivial, are two microscopic pin pricks under the 9, a small planchet void left of the O in OF, and a similar planchet flake at the left top of that F. Nicely struck MDS, Breen state VI, Heck state 4. The "Mound" at the top of the wreath is clear and similar mounds are now visible under ICA and NIT. Die clashmarks show on both sides and there is "spalling roughness" around the wreath caused by die erosion. A lightly worn cent with great eye appeal. Graded EF40 net VF35 and tied for CC#13 in the Noyes census, his photo #56001. This cataloger's EAC grade is EF40+. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label (35531.58+/26772314).
Ex Dr. Robert J. Shalowitz-Chris McCawley 1/2004-Paul Gerrie (The Northwest Collection), Goldbergs held in association with McCawley & Grellman Auctions 2/3/2013:12 ($16,100)-COL Steven K. Ellsworth.

The February 2013 Goldberg Pre-Long Beach Auction featured the Paul Gerrie Collection of Large Cents as its opening highlight, offering one of the most carefully selected cabinets of early American copper in recent decades. Gerrie's collection began with the iconic 1793 issues, including Chain and Wreath cents in Condition Census standing, such as an AU53 Chain AMERI cent and a lustrous MS62 Chain AMERICA cent, both pedigreed to earlier luminaries like Walter Husak and Denis Loring. The Wreath cents included outstanding examples with Vine and Bars, Lettered Edge, and Single Leaf edges, and the 1793 Liberty Cap was represented by a sharply struck AU53 tied for Condition Census honors. Together, these first-year issues underscored Gerrie's eye for quality, originality, and pedigree, setting the tone for the rest of the collection.

The strength of the sale continued into the 1794s, with multiple Head of 1793 types, including the famous S-18a and S-18b varieties, one of which was among the finest known in Mint State. Subsequent highlights included rare die marriages like the S-19b and important mid-grade examples tied for high census placement, along with later Liberty Caps and Draped Bust issues through the end of the decade. Many coins traced pedigrees to legendary collectors such as Hines, Sheldon, Naftzger, and Holmes, reinforcing their significance in the chain of copper scholarship. With its blend of landmark varieties, superb preservation, and impeccable provenance, the Gerrie Collection established itself as both a market event and a lasting reference for specialists in early large cents.
