Description

Elusive Near-Gem Saxe-Coburg-Gotha 10 Mark

Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. Karl Eduard gold 10 Mark 1905-A MS64+ NGC, Berlin mint, KM169, J-273, Fr-3855. Edge: ~ * ~. Head right / Crowned imperial eagle with shield on breast. Bathed in honeyed luster and bearing the chiseled portrait of Duke Charles Edward, the grandson of Queen Victoria, this is the only 10 Mark type issued by the House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, which would famously change its name during the First World War to the House of Windsor because of anti-German sentiment. On only one prior occasion has the business strike format of the type surfaced for auction with Heritage, this specimen bearing the superior assignment from NGC.
