Description

Cn. Plancius (ca. 55 BC). AR denarius (20mm, 3.56 gm, 1h). NGC VF 4/5 - 2/5, edge chips. Rome. CN•PLANCIVS-AED•CVR•S•C, head of Diana Planciana right, wearing pendant earring, pendant necklace and petasus, hair pulled up with some loose curls behind / Cretan goat standing right; bow and quiver to left. Crawford 432.

From the Merrill A. Gibson Collection of Ancient Coins.

Diana Planciana was an incarnation of the Roman goddess of the hunt, Diana. This version of Diana was worshipped by her cult at the Temple of Diana Planciana during the Roman Republic. Diana Planciana is often depicted wearing a petasos, or a broad brimmed hat that originated in ancient Greece but became a staple of Roman military uniform. The temple is often associated with Cn. Plancius, which is why Diana Planciana is frequently featured on his coinage.
