Description

German Colony. Wilhelm II 2 Rupien 1893 MS65 NGC, Berlin mint, KM5, J-714. The Rupie denomination for German East Africa was struck bearing most every date during it's run of production from 1890 to 1902; in contrast, the larger 2 Rupien denomination was only struck bearing dates of 1893 and 1894. This stark contrast in production span and overall number of specimens produced is reflected in the more pronounced scarcity of the issue at at hand. The 2 Rupien is the largest silver coin produced for Germany's colonial African territory, and though not quite the size of a prototypical Crown-size issue, at 35mm in diameter it is not far off. The limited run of this impressive issue stokes high demand in any quality grade, but Gems such as this are downright rare. Not since 2019 has a Gem or better example of the type surfaced with Heritage, a splendid opportunity for enthusiasts of the German East Africa series.
