Description

1662 Noe-31 Oak Tree Twopence, MS65+
Plated in Noe, Salmon, Wurtzbach
Likely Finest Known

1662 2PENCE Oak Tree Twopence, Small 2, Noe-31, W-240, Salmon 1-A, High R.6, MS65+ PCGS. CAC. 12.0 gn per its Ford appearance. This remarkable specimen is plated in the Noe, Wurtzbach, and Salmon references and is likely the finest known Noe-31. A beautifully patinated Gem that boasts apple-green centers and golden-brown borders. No abrasions are apparent, and the reverse centering is ideal. The obverse (tree side) is misaligned several degrees toward 7 o'clock, although the legends are complete. Both sides are moderately wavy, as produced by a rocker press. The high quality within the grade is confirmed by CAC.

All Oak Tree twopence were struck from the same pair of dies, which endured a series of recuttings and cracks. In 1947, American Numismatic Society curator Sydney P. Noe wrote the standard text on the series for many years. He identified five varieties (Noe-29 through Noe-34). In subsequent years, additional intermediate varieties were described, such as the Noe-31.5, Noe-32.1, and Noe-33.5 varieties that appeared in the January 2002 Hain Family Stack's auction.

In recent years, though, there has been a consolidation of the series. The 2009 Whitman Colonial Encyclopedia assigned all Oak Tree twopence to a single variety, W-240. Salmon (2010) separately lists only the Small 2 and Large 2 varieties, although small photographs are provided of six Noe varieties and Noe-31.5. Noe-31 has a small 2, unlike Noe-32 through Noe-34. The 2 has a lengthy "tail", unlike Noe-29, and has a lengthy break from the 2 through the A in ENGLAND, unlike Noe-30. The second 6 in the date is intact, unlike Noe-31.5. Such are the distinguishing characteristics of the rare Noe-31. Listed on page 8 of the 2026 Guide Book.
