Great Britain: Mary (Sole Reign, 1553-1558) Groat (4 Pence) ND (1553-1554) MS61 NGC,...
Description
Mary (Sole Reign, 1553-1558) Groat (4 Pence) ND (1553-1554) MS61 NGC, Tower mint, pomegranate mm, S-2492, N-1960. 2.18gm. MARIA • (m.m.) • D.' G.' ANG.' FRA S hIB.' REGI' lombardic lettering, unbarred As, crowned bust left, wearing simply-jeweled plain bodice and pearl necklace, rev. VERITA-S (m.m.) TEM-PORIS FILIA, lombardic lettering and unbarred As, square-topped Tudor shield over long cross fourchée, terminals with 'fishtail' ends. A classic Tudor issue, practically unheard of in certified Mint State condition. The thick pewter and russet patination is wholly original, as are the remnants of mint bloom that illuminate the presentation. Though still hampered by some of the classic drawbacks of hammered coinage, the relative fullness of Mary's portrait provides an appealing presentation of the Queen. This piece is about as nice an example of the Queen Mary Groat you could hope to find. From the Eternal Collection, Part III
